Animal microchipping in Ukraine: modern requirements, legislative norms and real benefits for owners

Why has chipping become the norm for responsible pet ownership?

Microchipping is not just an identification technology. It is an element of a traceability system that protects the animal, the owner and society. In Ukraine, this procedure has received a clear legal basis thanks to the updated Law "On Veterinary Medicine and Animal Welfare" (No. 1206-IX), which entered into force in 2026. The law harmonizes Ukrainian rules with European standards and makes animal identification part of the state health and welfare control system.

The Law clearly stipulates requirements for the traceability of domestic terrestrial animals and the maintenance of relevant records. Key provisions:

1. Animal traceability is a mandatory state requirement. The law stipulates that all domestic terrestrial animals must be identified and entered into appropriate registers. This is necessary for:

  • disease control,

  • preventing their spread,

  • rapid response in case of epizootic threats.

2. Responsibilities of animal owners

The owner is obliged to:

  • ensure the identification of the animal,

  • keep records about it,

  • report changes (owner, place of residence, loss of animal).

3. The role of the veterinarian

Veterinarian:

  • conducts chipping,

  • enters data into the register,

  • ensures the reliability of information,

  • is responsible for the correct execution of documents.

4. European vector

The law is consistent with European approaches, making chipping necessary for:

  • traveling with animals,

  • participation in international programs,

  • confirmation of the origin of the animal

What is a microchip and how does it work?

A microchip is a tiny implant (about the size of a grain of rice) that is inserted under the skin of an animal. It contains a unique 15-digit code that is read by a scanner. The code contains no personal information — just an identifier that is tied to an entry in the registry.

Advantages:

  • impossible to fake,

  • works all his life,

  • does not cause discomfort,

  • safe and biocompatible.

Why microchip an animal: practical arguments

1. Returning lost animals. A chip is a chance to bring your pet home even after years. Volunteers, police, veterinarians - everyone has scanners.

2. Travel and relocation. For traveling abroad, chipping is a mandatory requirement.

3. Proof of ownership. In disputed situations, the chip is legal evidence that is recognized by government agencies.

4. Health monitoring. Chipping is integrated into the disease prevention and monitoring system, which directly complies with the requirements of the Law.

How the procedure works at "VetPixel"

  1. A veterinarian examines an animal.

  2. A microchip is inserted subcutaneously into the withers area.

  3. The data is entered into a state or international register.

  4. The owner receives documentary confirmation.

The procedure lasts a few minutes and does not require anesthesia.

Microchipping and animal welfare

The law emphasizes that all veterinary procedures must be carried out with the animal's well-being in mind - minimizing stress, using safe methods, and using qualified personnel. Microchipping fully meets these requirements: it is quick, safe, and painless.

Microchipping as part of responsible pet care

For a modern pet owner, microchipping is not a formality, but a manifestation of care. For a veterinary clinic, it is an element of professional ethics. For the state, it is a tool for controlling animal health and protecting society.

Law No. 1206-IX makes this procedure not just recommended, but a systemic part of state policy in the field of veterinary medicine and animal welfare .

At VetPixel, we believe that every animal deserves safety and every owner deserves peace of mind.
